Creatine Calculator: Loading and Maintenance

Calculate an optional creatine loading phase from your body weight and compare it with a daily maintenance range. This tool explains the ISSN protocol for healthy adults and lets you choose maintenance without loading.

Loading is optional. This is an adult reference protocol, not an individual prescription.

Optional loading for 5 days: divide into four servings of about 6 g. Then use the 3–5 g/day maintenance range. Healthy-adult reference, not an individual prescription.

How it works: the ISSN protocol

The source is Kreider and colleagues' 2017 International Society of Sports Nutrition position stand, Safety and efficacy of creatine supplementation in exercise, sport, and medicine. It describes an optional loading approach of approximately 0.3 grams of creatine monohydrate per kilogram of body weight per day for five to seven days. A usual maintenance range after loading is three to five grams daily.

Loading is optional. The position stand also describes a slower approach using the smaller daily amount without an initial loading phase. Choose maintenance only if you want to see that option. The result then removes the loading quantities instead of implying that an initial higher dose is required.

The loading and maintenance formulas

Loading grams per day = body weight in kg × 0.3. Total loading grams = daily loading grams × selected loading days. The calculator also divides the daily loading amount into four equal portions as an arithmetic example. That division is a way to understand the quantity, not a personalized timing instruction.

Maintenance remains a displayed range of 3–5 g per day. This calculator does not scale maintenance indefinitely with body weight or extend loading beyond seven days. The unit toggle converts pounds to kilograms before calculating grams; the supplement quantities themselves always remain in grams.

Worked example: an 80 kg adult

For an 80 kg body weight, 80 × 0.3 = 24 g per day during the optional loading phase. Five days total 120 g; seven days total 168 g. Dividing 24 g into four equal portions gives 6 g per portion. After that phase, the displayed maintenance range is 3–5 g daily.

Skip loadingNo loading phase3–5 g/day
Five-day loading24 g/day; 120 g total3–5 g/day afterward
Seven-day loading24 g/day; 168 g total3–5 g/day afterward

Those totals describe the calculation, rather than how much product you should purchase or use without considering its label. A scoop can contain a different mass from the amount of creatine in a serving. Check the actual ingredient quantity and avoid treating rounded kitchen measures as laboratory measurements.

Safety context for healthy adults

The referenced sports-nutrition protocol is intended as general context for healthy adults. This calculator cannot review kidney function, medical history, medicines, pregnancy, breastfeeding, or the suitability of a particular supplement. Consult a qualified clinician before use when any of those circumstances apply or when you have another health concern.

The source's safety discussion is not a guarantee for every person or product. More loading powder is not automatically a better training decision. This page does not prescribe extra water, diagnose symptoms, or provide a treatment plan. If supplementation causes a concern, get appropriate individual advice rather than changing the calculator to obtain a preferred answer.

Keep supplementation beside the training basics

A loading calculation does not choose exercises, establish technique, or earn a heavier working set. Use the workout generator for a deterministic starting plan, and read progressive overload for a clear increase condition. Repeated, comparable sessions tell you whether your training is progressing.

The protein calculator and macro calculator can organize separate nutrition decisions. Read protein to build muscle for the food-pattern context. Trainer supports logging and coaching for strength training; the relevant next step is to record the actual workout and use that evidence for progression, rather than treating a supplement number as a complete plan.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need to load creatine?

No. The ISSN position stand describes loading as a way to increase muscle creatine stores more quickly. A maintenance-only approach using 3–5 g daily increases stores more gradually. The calculator supports either choice.

Does maintenance rise with my loading dose?

This tool displays the ISSN's general 3–5 g daily maintenance range, rather than automatically continuing the larger loading amount. It does not decide where an individual should sit in that range.

Which form of creatine is this based on?

The source protocol concerns creatine monohydrate. Check the product label for grams of creatine rather than assuming every scoop contains the same amount or that a supplement blend is equivalent.

Who should ask a clinician before using it?

This reference is for healthy adults. If you have kidney disease, are pregnant or breastfeeding, take medicines, or have another medical concern, discuss creatine with a qualified clinician before using it. The tool cannot assess your circumstances.
