The r/Fitness Beginner Routine, Tracked in Trainer

The r/Fitness Basic Beginner Routine alternates two short full-body sessions with recovery between visits. It is a starting barbell routine, distinct from r/bodyweightfitness's Recommended Routine and from the wiki's broader recommended-program list.

Set it up in Trainer

Create routines A and B in Trainer, using the three movements and target sets below. Note the final-set plus convention in your routine notes. Continue the alternating order after a missed visit.

This page follows the r/Fitness Basic Beginner Routine, not the similarly named bodyweight routine. The basic routine is intended as a short introduction to barbell training; the wiki recommends moving to a more comprehensive routine within three months.

A and B working sets

SessionExercisesSets and reps
ABarbell row, bench press, squatEach 3 × 5; final set adds controlled reps
BChin-up or equivalent, overhead press, deadliftEach 3 × 5; final set adds controlled reps

Finish the sets of one lift before moving to the next. The final plus set leaves roughly one or two reps available rather than requiring absolute failure. Choose starting loads that allow clear controlled reps.

Traditional progression rules

The source adds 2.5 lb total to upper-body lifts and 5 lb total to lower-body lifts after each successful occurrence. A final set above 10 reps doubles that increment. Fewer than 15 completed total reps calls for a 10% reduction at the next occurrence. Check the source and available plates for the exact rounded load.

How Trainer supports auto progression

Trainer logs your actual sets, stores the exercise history, and suggests the next load and reps from completed targets and optional effort. It can prefill the next set. This shared progression helps connect the record to the next workout.

The source's exact final-set bonus increment and 15-rep/10% reset are named-program rules you should review and apply manually. Do not assume a general Trainer suggestion executes every rule of the original routine. Edit the target when following that exact policy.

Keep a beginner routine small

Do not add every accessory you see in a program catalog during the first week. Learn the movements and preserve the alternating schedule. If a chin-up target is currently impractical, choose a suitable equivalent and record it consistently.

Know when to move on

Use this as an introduction, then review a more comprehensive program rather than extending the training-wheels routine indefinitely. GZCLP and a manageable upper/lower arrangement are options to inspect when the current record and schedule support more work.

Frequently asked questions

Is this the bodyweightfitness Recommended Routine?

No. This page describes r/Fitness's Basic Beginner barbell routine. The similarly named r/bodyweightfitness Recommended Routine is a different program.

How does Trainer auto-progress my training?

Trainer uses completed sets, rep targets, history, and optional effort information to suggest the next load and reps and fill the next set. You can edit these suggestions. Exact named-program reset or tier rules may require manual changes.

Should I increase the load after a missed target?

Review the completed sets and technique first. Follow the program's rule for the actual result rather than adding weight simply because another week has started.
