What decides the comparison.

What Trainer connects

Trainer can build a starter plan from your experience, available days, goals, and equipment. Saved or library programs may retain their own schedules, so inspect the selected plan rather than assuming every named routine automatically conforms to onboarding preferences. Routines and next-set targets remain editable.

Where StrongLifts fits

Stay with StrongLifts if you want its program family and have the equipment to follow it. Automatic handling of the intended progression can be more valuable than a large menu of alternative exercises. Its published phone and Watch support is also relevant if that is already a comfortable setup.

Before changing your routine

Save your current program version, last completed session, working loads, and stall or deload state. Choose whether you are preserving that program or selecting a new equipment-aware plan in Trainer. Review starting targets and any manual progression calculations. Do not assume the old program’s rules transferred with its exercise names.

Two apps, two jobs.

Best for a plan, a log, and a clear next set.

Trainer connects equipment-aware strength plans, editable next-set targets, and recorded workout history on iPhone, with set logging on Apple Watch.

Pros

  • Starter plans use your days, level, goals and equipment; library programs can retain their own schedule
  • History-based targets, PRs, recorded workout history, and Strong/Hevy CSV import
  • Log already-synced Watch routines without a nearby iPhone; initial setup and syncing use the phone

Cons

  • Designed for iPhone, iPad and Apple Watch
  • AI features require sign-in and consent; free allowances apply, and Pro includes more coaching

How we compared.

Trainer is our app. We compare documented features and training workflows.

  • Compare the same real job: a written plan, a personal log, adaptive guidance, or nutrition tracking.
  • Verify features from each app's own pages and store listing; do not infer that an unlisted feature is absent.
  • Show free boundaries, Watch workflow, availability, and pricing uncertainty before asking someone to choose.

Frequently asked questions

Is Trainer an automatic copy of StrongLifts 5×5?

No. Trainer offers plans, templates, and editable routines. Check named-program progression, missed-rep handling, and deload rules rather than assuming exact equivalence.

Can I switch apps without changing my program?

Yes, if the new app can represent the routine and you preserve its progression instructions. Some calculations or changes may need manual handling.

Will a different app fix a strength plateau?

That outcome is not established. A replacement can improve planning and record keeping; it cannot guarantee a training result.
