Trainer vs SmartGym: Plans, Tracking & Trade-Offs

The verdict. Trainer is our first SmartGym alternative for iPhone-led planning, editable next targets, and free core logging with synced Watch routines. SmartGym remains a particularly relevant choice if fully independent Watch planning or its wider iPad and Mac experience is essential.

What decides the comparison.

What Trainer connects

Trainer’s strength is the connection between the iPhone plan, actual completed sets, and an editable next target. Its core tracking, next-weight suggestions, saved/library programs, and history are free. Optional AI planning and coaching require the relevant account, consent, and allowances.

Where SmartGym fits

Stay with SmartGym if its independent Watch workflow is the reason you train with it. The same applies if you make regular use of its published iPad or Mac clients. Trainer’s iPhone and Watch focus does not establish equivalent native apps on those other devices.

Before changing your routine

Write down the SmartGym Watch actions you need, especially any workout generation or program editing done away from iPhone. Rebuild your current routine in Trainer and sync it from iPhone before testing a wrist-only session. Verify the completed record afterward. Direct SmartGym history import and full standalone feature equivalence are not promised.

Two apps, two jobs.

How we compared.

Trainer is our app. We compare documented features and training workflows.

  • Compare the same real job: a written plan, a personal log, adaptive guidance, or nutrition tracking.
  • Verify features from each app's own pages and store listing; do not infer that an unlisted feature is absent.
  • Show free boundaries, Watch workflow, availability, and pricing uncertainty before asking someone to choose.
